Smoking Ban!

Well, guys.

From July 1, Britain goes smoke-free in pubs, restuarants, clubs etc. I don't smoke myself, but I'm 50-50 about the decision. What say you good folks - is it right and good to enforce the ban - or a breach of the rights of individuals that enjoy smoking when they are at social venues?

Likewise, I am 50-50 about the idea. I have decided to stop smoking on the 1st of July because I can't bare the thought of going to a pub and drinking a pint of beer without smoking a cigeratte! I am going to quit so I won't have to put up with that agony!
I think had the smoking ban not been introduced I would probably carry on smoking. Whether this is a good thing or not I don't know. Aside from needing cigerattes because I am addicted, I actually enjoy smoking too! Smoking is a social thing and it's nice to have a smoke while sitting around a table with a group of friends. If only for something to do when the conversation dries up! On the other hand, obviously one needs to consider the detriment to health not only to yourself but others around you.
While I do think the ban is an invasion on people's rights, I also think not introducing it is also an invasion on people's rights. Why should non-smokers have to put up with it?
 
I hate it when I get smoke smells in my clothes after being in a pub or another smoky place, therefore I'm for it :).
 
I'm all for the smoking ban - I personally can put up with it in a pub though, it's part of the atmosphere, but it'll be nice not to have to deal with it soon :)

My main hate of smoking is in restaurants - I find it totally disgusting that when a non-smoker (such as myself) is eating, we have to put up with smoke from other people, and non-smoking sections don't really help, they just slightly delay the smoke reaching us (diffusion of gases in the air...) Why should I have to deal with smoke when I'm trying to enjoy a meal, it disgusts me.

I'm 110% for it :D
 
I think it should be left to the businesses to determine this, not the government. So, no, I'm not in favor of any smoking ban, unless the owner of an establishment chooses to have one.
...and I don't smoke, nor encourage anyone to do start. However, I see this as government intrusion.
 
I'm all for it, I quit smoking about 4 years ago and I'm thankful for it, I'm sick of the smell. It even includes bus shelters in the ban, there's nothing worse for me than waiting for a bus on a rainy day under the shelter to have someone light up a cigarette right in my face.
 
Dude you should have a thread based on your decision to quit - I think it'd provide an insight into what it's like for us non-smokers, plus it'll give you a place to rant and express your feelings towards quitting and the days challenges :)
 
Im a smoker and think its a great idea. Megamaced isnt the first person ive come across who has said they are going to quit on 1st July. Being in a pub is bad for smokers, you just smoke more even before you crave a fag.

Best of luck Megamaced, its hard work im sure you know. Ive managed to pack em up for a year twice but end up smoking some dope and because ive had that nicotine hit I end up smoking fags just to get out of smoking joints. Just dont get cocky and have that "for old times sake" smoke.

tbh I think they should just ban fags, they are useless.

That's what I did last time I gave up for 6 weeks earlier this year! I won't be making that mistake again.

Not nationwide. Some cities do. They just put one in effect in my city. The thing is, a few years ago they made businesses put up enclosed smoking sections. Now, they come down with this. These businesses were forced to do this, and, as far as I know, they're not being compensated for all that work that's just been made for nothing.
 
In some ways they're taking it a little too far over here, sure the £50 fine if you smoke in a public area is alright, acts as a deterrent. But if a workplace fails to provide a smoke-free area with appropriate signage, they get fined £2,500. Steep or what?
 
yep, we have the smoking bans around here, in fact in live in this area where there are three pretty decent sized cites rate by each other, and one of them is smoke free completely in the urban downtown area. That and the local community college is smoke free now to. Oh yeah, and the same with the bars and that round here, its not cool.

Yeah I stopped smoking for about 6 weeks but..... well you know how it goes :D

Today marks my third day without smoke and it's been a painful and agonising affair so far!
 
I've heard Niquitin brand things help a lot. You can get them easily from Boots. :)

Yea thats exactly what i was wondering when i read that u left smoking that how can someone leave smoking so fast. but then again i have no experience with this so i thought it might be possible if u r doing.

PS. Yea as B and WWR suggesting, do u need to take nething like that or may b u r one of those type of people those who just believe on their will poewr and doesnt require ne medicine.
 
I wouldnt bother with the patches, you just end up addicted to them! I know people who have been on the patches for 10 years or something!
